Vercors - Frankreich (Isére, Drôme)

The Vercors region is located in the south-west of Grenoble and should be visited by each speleologue once in the livetime! History was written here with the first -1000 cave (Gouffre Berger) in the world. Actually, many systems like Trou Qui Souffle, Grotte de la Luire or Grotte Gournier are as large as up to 50 km and depth down to -1000 m!
Further on, the region is also worth visiting at daylight: mountains up to 2300m, huge and nice forests, a high variety of plants and nice small villages.
The caves in the Vercors are widely differing - from active water caves to large fossile tunnels. Often, the vertical caves (named scialet here)consist of long meanders, crossing the old fossile tunnels at serious depth!
As a result, one has to do a lot of rigging, befor the "ballade souterrain"!
